CCIL is Supporting – and Courting – STEM Students in Canada
TORONTO (April 30, 2018) – The Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories (CCIL) is launching a new, multifaceted program designed to help young people further their education and advance their careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Called CCIL Supports STEM Students, the program includes scholarships, co-op placements, summer jobs, and other opportunities. As part of this national effort, CCIL is also working with Tech-Access Canada on another initiative aimed at creating enhanced learning experiences for students at colleges affiliated with Technology Access Centres (TACs) across the country.
“Through collaboration between the TACs and CCIL member laboratories, it is our hope that these local partnerships will produce exciting new opportunities, including student access to specialized facilities and equipment, mentoring, and private-sector employment of highly skilled STEM graduates,” says Gordon Leaman, President of CCIL.
The CCIL Supports STEM Students program will be announced today at the association’s Annual General Meeting in Toronto.

CCIL provides scholarships in such fields as chemical and environmental technology, materials engineering, and civil engineering technology through its various partners, including: College of the North Atlantic, New Brunswick Community College, British Columbia Institute of Technology, The Transportation Association of Canada Foundation, and now Durham College.
As well, CCIL’s members operate more than 460 facilities across the country. Many offer co-op placements and summer jobs for students, and actively recruit new graduates for full-time positions in their laboratories and field testing units. “We are celebrating our 25th anniversary this year. With a quarter century of success
behind us, we wanted to give back in a meaningful way,” Leaman notes.
Also at the AGM, CCIL will debut its new video which encourages STEM students to consider a career in the testing industry.
Faced with an aging workforce, rapidly evolving technologies and the need to innovate, Canadian businesses will require highly-skilled STEM graduates in order to remain competitive in the future. “We are excited about being able to play a role in supporting young Canadians,” Leaman says. “And frankly, we also want to attract some of that talent into the testing industry.”
CCIL represents the independent testing industry in Canada. Its members provide a broad array of testing services, working in such fields as construction materials, manufactured goods, minerals, oil and gas, crops, food, air, water, soil and more. Many of the members complement laboratory testing with field testing services and/or engineering consulting services.
